Icom IC-7300 is the first direct sampling SDR (software defined radio) available from one of the "big three" japanese manufacturers. This helps it bring a whole new level of performance at an accesible price point, a much more flexible configuration and a set of features only seen in top-of-the line equipment. Real-time panadapter or fully customizable filters are just the tip of the iceberg.

Sure, amateur equipment has been using for a long time various levels of digital signal processing (DSP), but usually this was done in the last part of the receive chain, where it mostly impacted audio quality and not receiver performance. Moving to a direct-sampling SDR architecture means the signal coming from the antenna is directly transposed to the digital domain and instead of all the previously familiar receiver stages (such as mixers, filters, demodulators etc) we are using mathematical formulas applied to the data stream. The advantage of this approach is it eliminates all problems related to real-world hardware receivers (noise, distorsion, losses, imperfections, limitations etc) and opens up a new world on how you can use or visualize RF signals. Goodbye unwanted mixing products, AGC non-linearity, IF chain IMD or filter blow-by. You want a 200Hz to 2250Hz SSB filter ? Just go into the menu, customize it to that value and see how that carrier at 2260Hz simply doesn't get trough; yes, filter width and shape is just a matter of settings, leaving it all to mathematics to carry it out. Basically, the only part that limits the receiver performance is the Analog-Digital Converter (ADC) that samples the RF signal, and those are already very good.

A quick radio check with the V2 magnetic loop, John was in Perth about 2000+Km`s away from me. He was using 400Watts and a 3 element beam. No match for my 5watts and ground mount loop.

In the beginning I was a little unhappy with my power output while trying to produce a clean signal on PSK31, ie., no ALC showing. After reading a few good articles on PSK31 I have managed to fine tune the Icom 7300 and produce a nice clean signal on PSK31 while still getting Po close to what is set in the transceiver.

I received a QSL card from N5FAN and he also included a nice print out of my PSK31 signal and he commented on sending a great waterfall.

Icom finally published the official release date and the recommended price. The IC-7300 should be available by January 2016 at a price of about 140,000yen, that is equal to about US$ 1,200 or EUR 1,100

This new model has a high-performance real-time spectrum scope and employs a new RF direct sampling system. The IC-7300’s real-time spectrum scope provides top-level performance in resolution, sweep speed and dynamic range.

Many thanks for your thorough and thoughtful comments on the IC-7300. As you are doubtless aware, I have tested a fair number of direct-sampling SDR's over the past few years as well as legacy (conventional) transceivers. I have learned from this test activity that a direct-sampling SDR receiver is a totally different "animal" than a legacy receiver, and requires a completely different approach to performance testing. The old "touchstone" metrics of DR3 (3rd-order IMD dynamic range), BDR (blocking dynamic range) and IP3 (3rd-order intercept point) are completely meaningless in the context of an ADC.

I have covered these matters in a paper I gave at our club, at APDXC 2014 and at several other venues. The paper is entitled "HF Receiver Testing: Issues and Advances." Here is the link:

Innovative IC-7300 HF/50/70MHz Transceiver launched at Tokyo Ham Fair 2015

Icom Inc. had a huge amount of interest on its stand at last weekend’s Tokyo Ham Fair 2015 with the unveiling of the IC-7300 HF/50/70MHz Transceiver.

The launch, which caught most people by surprise, saw the manufacturer introduce a new base station transceiver incorporating the latest RF direct sampling system, a first for an Amateur radio transceiver*.
The IC-7300 transceiver, an aesthetically, attractive looking base station, features a 4.3 inch touch screen colour TFT LCD screen with a high performance real time band scope.

A first for an Amateur radio transceiver, the IC-7300 uses a RF Direct Sampling System, a technology normally seen in Software Defined Radios. RF signals are mostly processed through the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array), rather than by physical devices enabling high performance real-time spectrum scope in a compact body.

The IC-7300 includes a built-in integrated wide-frequency Automatic Antenna Tuner making ideal for field operation. The radio provides 100 watts output power on HF/50MHz bands and 50 watts on 70MHz (European versions only).

Icom Inc. has produced a pre-release leaflet for the IC-7300 which you can download from this page. This information is preliminary and a full document will be made available nearer to the product’s launch.
So far, we have no details about pricing and availability.

ICOM 7300 sdcard on the front

i wonder what the sdcard on the front is for.

Assuming it works like the ID-31/51/5100 and IC-7100 the SD will be able to record QSOs and store configurations (so you can have different setting and memories for different modes or operators or to clone radios). You can also use the SD card to save voice memories.

By default those radios will record any QSO once you've transmitted (the PTT is the start trigger) but if you are just listening or want to record something in a non-amateur band you can also manually start and stop a recording from the menu.
